American Express Green
Overview
The Green card is a solid earner on Dining (3x), Travel (3x) and most interestingly Transit (3x). It also provides $100 in lounge access, CLEAR Plus, Shop Runner as well as some limited purchase and travel protections.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit well with the Gold and Platinum cards which are the two most popular cards in the Amex ecosystem.
- Gold beats the 3x dining with 4x, includes many of the same protections and throws in 4x on supermarkets.
- Platinum doesn’t bonus spend, but has much better travel benefits, some of which preclude using the Green on travel.
So who should get this card? Well, it’s probably a reasonable deal if you:
- Only need a couple lounge visits per year.
- Do not intend to get the Gold or Platinum.
Pair it with other points earning cards:
- Blue Business Plus: 2x everywhere.
Or cash back cards like:
- Blue Cash Preferred ($95): supermarkets, streaming, transit.
- Blue Cash Everyday: supermarkets, online, gas.
- Cash Magnet: 1.5x everywhere.
