Chase Sapphire Reserve
Overview
The Chase Sapphire Reserve stands out in a few key ways.
- Best travel protections in the business.
- Easy to redeem travel credits.
- Increasingly excellent lounge access.
Families in particular may be interested to know that you get two free guests in Sapphire lounges for either the primary cardholder or authorized users ($75). If Chase continues opening lounges at their current pace, they’ll soon reach parity with American Express’s Centurion lounge offerings where even Platinum holders no longer get free guest access (without spend).
The main downside to this card is that, if you have another premium card like the American Express Platinum or Capital One Venture X, many of the benefits will overlap and the $550 annual fee becomes questionable, particularly if you don’t use the partner benefits (Doordash, Instacart, Peloton) or expect them to get phased out. In this case, you may be better off getting the cheaper Sapphire Preferred.
If you want the best in class travel protections, you might consider getting the Ritz card which has a better value proposition and similar protections. This is no longer available to new applicants but if you have had the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card for more than a year, you can product change to the Ritz.
